What is the difference between drive in rack and drive through rack?

Nov 03, 2025

Drive-in and drive-through racks are both popular types of high-density storage systems used in warehouses, distribution centers, and manufacturing facilities. Here are the key differences between the two:

  1. Drive-In Racks:

    • In a drive-in rack system, pallets are stored by being placed on rails that run the depth of the rack. Forklifts drive into the rack system to deposit or retrieve pallets.
    • Drive-in racks typically have a last-in, first-out (LIFO) inventory management system, meaning that the last pallet placed onto the rack is the first pallet that will be removed.
    • Drive-in racks are ideal for storing large quantities of the same type of product and where stock rotation is not a critical factor.
    • These racks are cost-effective as they minimize the amount of space allocated to aisles.
  2. Drive-Through Racks:

    • Drive-through rack systems feature entry and exit points on opposite sides of the rack. Forklifts can drive straight through the system, allowing for separate entrance and exit points.
    • Drive-through racks often use a first-in, first-out (FIFO) inventory management system, providing more flexibility in managing inventory compared to drive-in racks.
    • This system is useful for facilities with high stock turnover or products with expiration dates where maintaining proper stock rotation is crucial.
    • Drive-through racks require more aisle space compared to drive-in racks since forklifts need access from both ends of the system.

In summary, the main differences between drive-in and drive-through rack systems lie in their pallet access configuration, inventory management methods (LIFO vs. FIFO), and suitability for different types of inventory management needs. Drive-in racks are more space-efficient and cost-effective for storing large quantities of the same product with less concern for stock rotation, while drive-through racks offer better accessibility and are suitable for facilities where efficient stock rotation is essential.
